Adding Fractions with unlike denominators.

Today we will look at adding fractions. When we have fractions with the same denominator it's very easy to add.

    Ex. 1/3 +1/3 = 2/3

But what happens when we have fractions that have different denominators? This is when we have to find the lowest common denominator.

    Ex. 1/2+1/4

In this case we will have to look at the multiples of 2 and 4 in order to find the common multiple between the two numbers.

    2 - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12

    4 - 4, 8, 12, 16, 20

The lowest common multiple is 4. Since 1/4 already has a denominator of 4, we only have to change 1/2 to have a denominator of four. How we do this is by multiplying 1/2 by 2 in order to get a denominator of 4, what you do to the bottom you must do to the top.

    1/2*2/2 = 2/4

Now we can add the two fractions together!

    2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4
