Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators

Subtracting Fractions with unlike denominators is exactly the same as adding fractions with unlike denominators.      If fractions have the same denominator you can add or subtract normally.                                                    2 /3 - 1 /3 = 1 /3      If you take a look you can see the denominator does not change, though the numerator does.      Though if the denominator is not the same you have to change it. Example:                                                  5/6 - 1/3      The denominator is not the same so, first thing we must do is find the lowest common multiple                        Multiples of 3 - 3, 6 , 9, 12, 15                         Multiples of 6 - 6, 12, 18, 24, 30     6 is the lowest common multiple. We have to change 1/3 so it has a denominator of 6. What do you multiply 3 by to make 6? The answer is 2.      1/3 * 2/2 because what you do to the bottom you do to the top.     1/3 * 2/2 = 2/6     Now we can subtract. 5/6 - 2/6     What is the a

ELA - Developing Ideas

FORTNITE!!!     Got your attention! If I asked you to write about Fortnite, what would you write about? Would you write about a time you were playing Fortnite? Would you write about your favourite character? Would you write about how "it is horrible and I should be playing Warzone?" Would you write about how it's created a zombie of young children who stare at their TV too much?      Fact is there is sooooo much you could write about when it comes to the topic.     Follow the link about  Developing Ideas . Learn how to narrow down your subject when in your writing, fiction or non-fiction.      Then, I'd like you to think about a non-fiction topic, it could be a country, a bird, a person and write me a one page report on this topic.  Your essay should be 1 page, about 4-5 paragraphs.  First Paragraph - should be an introduction about the topic.  Paragraphs 2, 3, 4 - should be detailed facts about the topic Paragraph 5 - Should be a conclusion of your paper and of

Adding Fractions with unlike denominators.

Image
Today we will look at adding fractions. When we have fractions with the same denominator it's very easy to add.      Ex. 1/3 +1/3 = 2/3       But what happens when we have fractions that have different denominators? This is when we have to find the lowest common denominator.      Ex. 1/2+1/4      In this case we will have to look at the multiples of 2 and 4 in order to find the common multiple between the two numbers.      2 - 2, 4 , 6, 8, 10, 12     4 - 4 , 8, 12, 16, 20     The lowest common multiple is 4. Since 1/4 already has a denominator of 4, we only have to change 1/2 to have a denominator of four. How we do this is by multiplying 1/2 by 2 in order to get a denominator of 4, what you do to the bottom you must do to the top.      1/2*2/2 = 2/4     Now we can add the two fractions together!     2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4     Please watch the video below and answer the fractions questions below.       Loading…

Equivalent Fractions

Image
Equivalent Fractions - Equivalent fractions are fractions that are equal.      Say you have a pizza cut into 4 pieces and you eat 2 pieces of the pizza, this example can be written in two different but equal fractions. If you look at the pizza you can describe it as having 1/2 of the pizza. But as you look at the pizza there are 2 pieces left which can be written as 2/4. There are many other equivalent fractions to 1/2, other examples are 5/10 or 3/6.      Please watch the video below  and answer the questions at the bottom of the page.  Loading…

Fractions Pt. 1

Image
A fraction is a numerical quantity (number) that is less than one. An example would be to cut an apple into two equal parts, each piece will make one whole apple. Therefore each equal part of the apple will be called half of an apple, which we could write as 1/2. 1/2 is a fraction. When we look at the fraction 1/2 the 1 is called a numerator and the 2 is the denominator. The numerator is the amount we have available to us and the denominator is how much we need to make something whole. Say you have 1/2 of a chocolate bar and your sibling has the other 1/2, if you and your sibling put each 1/2 together you'd have a whole chocolate bar. Please watch the video below and answer the questions based on your knowledge of fractions. Loading…
