Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators

Subtracting Fractions with unlike denominators is exactly the same as adding fractions with unlike denominators.

If fractions have the same denominator you can add or subtract normally.

                                        2/3 - 1/3 = 1/3

If you take a look you can see the denominator does not change, though the numerator does.

Though if the denominator is not the same you have to change it. Example:

                                        5/6 - 1/3

The denominator is not the same so, first thing we must do is find the lowest common multiple

                       Multiples of 3 - 3, 6, 9, 12, 15

                        Multiples of 6 - 6, 12, 18, 24, 30

6 is the lowest common multiple. We have to change 1/3 so it has a denominator of 6. What do you multiply 3 by to make 6? The answer is 2.

1/3 * 2/2 because what you do to the bottom you do to the top.

    1/3 * 2/2 = 2/6

    Now we can subtract. 5/6 - 2/6

    What is the answer?
