Fractions Pt. 1

A fraction is a numerical quantity (number) that is less than one. An example would be to cut an apple into two equal parts, each piece will make one whole apple. Therefore each equal part of the apple will be called half of an apple, which we could write as 1/2. 1/2 is a fraction.

When we look at the fraction 1/2 the 1 is called a numerator and the 2 is the denominator. The numerator is the amount we have available to us and the denominator is how much we need to make something whole.

Say you have 1/2 of a chocolate bar and your sibling has the other 1/2, if you and your sibling put each 1/2 together you'd have a whole chocolate bar.
