Subtracting Fractions with unlike denominators is exactly the same as adding fractions with unlike denominators. If fractions have the same denominator you can add or subtract normally. 2 /3 - 1 /3 = 1 /3 If you take a look you can see the denominator does not change, though the numerator does. Though if the denominator is not the same you have to change it. Example: 5/6 - 1/3 The denominator is not the same so, first thing we must do is find the lowest common multiple ...
Today we will look at adding fractions. When we have fractions with the same denominator it's very easy to add. Ex. 1/3 +1/3 = 2/3 But what happens when we have fractions that have different denominators? This is when we have to find the lowest common denominator. Ex. 1/2+1/4 In this case we will have to look at the multiples of 2 and 4 in order to find the common multiple between the two numbers. 2 - 2, 4 , 6, 8, 10, 12 4 - 4 , 8, 12, 16, 20 The lowest common multiple is 4. Since 1/4 already has a denominator of 4, we only have to change 1/2 to have a denominator of four. How we do this is by multiplying 1/2 by 2 in order to get a denominator of 4, what you do to the bottom you must do to the top. 1/2*2/2 = 2/4 Now we can add the two fractions together! 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 Please wa...
